Heroes, Heroines, or Protagonists

The main characters in my books aren’t protagonists. I think of them instead as heroes or heroines, depending on their gender presentation, because in battles over sex and power the hero/heroine dynamic seems more appropriate and realistic. In our culture where sex is either kinky, forbidden, wrong, dirty, etc. (you supply the negative adjective), the main character who is coming into his or her own sexuality is battling not only their own fears by society’s expectations. This is the job of a hero/heroine ready to take on the hoards for a better tomorrow.
